Any sporting activity, which involves, walking, running or jumping places greater physical demands on the body, and especially on your feet.
Our feet absorb 1 to 2 times our body weight during normal walking but up to 3-4 times our weight when running. Whichever activity you participate in, chances are you may have incurred a foot, ankle or knee injury at some stage of your sporting life. 85% of Athletes do! Not surprisingly, injuries we see to the feet and lower limbs comprise of a large proportion of sports related injuries.
A significant proportion of Sports labs sports-related injuries are directly attributed to the feet or lower limbs. As feet, ankles, knees and hips are the weight-bearing and shock absorbing structures of your body, they are most vulnerable under stress or constant impact.
What can go wrong during sport?
Is heel pain caused by heel spurs?
One of the most common conditions that we see are Heel spurs, often associated with plantar fasciitis (short term) fasciosis (long term). Often our patients suffering with plantar fasciosis have a spur on the calcaneus that is visible on an X-rays. Enthesopathy/Heel spurs are small bony calcification of tendons extending from the heel bone or calcaneus. Spurs form due to stresses placed upon the tendon and the bone. Repetitive trauma results in calcium being layered at the trauma line which gradually thickens up. Repeated trauma can occur due to being overweight or obese, wearing high heels frequently, or having flat feet, running in inappropriate footwear with poor biomechanics.

Is your knee pain Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome?
The patellofemoral joint involves the quadriceps muscles, the knee cap, and the bony surface on the top of the leg bone (tibia). The tendon of the thigh muscles joins to the knee cap and the surface on the top of the leg bone. When you straighten your leg, the quadriceps muscles pull on the tibia (leg bone) and move the knee cap along with the leg. Patellofemoral pain syndrome can occur when the knee cap is not in its neutral position. The biomechanics of the foot are common directly related to patellofemoral pain syndrome which can be experienced when,
- Pain in the knee area worsened by going up or down stairs, or running up or down hill.
- Pain in the knee area when running (runners knee)
You are more prone to developing this syndrome if you have flat or pronated feet, because this increases stress on the knees (the feet lack the ability to shock absorb in pronated feet, causing the knee to do all the work).

Is your foot pain due to back problems?
The your lower back is where the nerves to your legs and feet originate from, often changes or trauma there cause foot and or leg pain.
- Back injuries can often harm the spinal nerve roots and cause shooting, burning pain or numbness in the legs and feet.
- Slipped/Herniated discs occur when the disc herniates, or ‘slips’ from its neutral position causing tension impingement to the nerves. Herniated discs can occur due to trauma, lifting heavy weights, often wear and tear contributed by poor core strength and stability.
- Sciatica is often caused by compression or irritation of the spinal nerves and the discomfort is felt down the back of one or both legs
Symptoms of nervous involvement include burning or tingling pain and or numbness
Is your hip and back pain due to bad feet?
